About The Films:
The Emigrants - 1:00 PM, Saturday November 19
Director Jan Troell’s now classic film which premiered in 1971 and is based on Vilhelm Moberg’s epoch-making novels about Karl-Oskar and Kristina, who emigrated in 1850 from Småland in Sweden to the promised land of Minnesota. The Emigrants launched the careers of Max von Sydow and Liv Ullman, and later became the basis for the musical Kristina från Duvemåla by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson.
Good Evening Mr Wallenberg - 5:45 PM, Saturday November 19
Stellan Skarsgård portrays Raoul Wallenberg, Swedish diplomat, businessman and humanitarian who successfully rescued thousands of Jews from the Holocaust in Nazi-occupied Hungary during World War II by allowing them passage into Sweden. The film, which was directed by Kjell Grede and premiered in 1990, is based on real events. It is a gripping depiction of human compassion and the necessity for migration during times of war.
The New Land - 1:00 PM, Sunday November 20th
In The New Land (1972), director Jan Troell’s famous sequel to The Emigrants (1971), we continue to follow the fates of Karl-Oskar and Kristina as they establish their lives in Minnesota in the mid-19th century. They struggle with the harsh conditions of the new land in an effort to build a better life for themselves and their family. As they work hard to realize their dreams, adversity hits them when the Civil War erupts.
Zozo - 4:30 PM, Sunday November 20th
Director Josef Fares, himself an immigrant in Sweden, tells the story of Zozo, a young arabic boy, who emigrates from Lebanon to Sweden. Zozo lives a fairly normal life in war-struck Beirut, but is eventually affected by the war and finds that his only choice is to emigrate. His destination becomes Sweden, a country which is completely foreign to him. Zozo (2005) gives us an insightful illustration of the physical and emotional journey that characterizes the migration of a young refugee.
